GMAT Exam: Your Gateway to Global MBA Programs
Complete Guide to the Graduate Management Admission Test
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is an internationally recognized standardized examination designed for admission to graduate-level business programs worldwide. Conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the GMAT is accepted by over 9,000 business institutions globally, including the world's most prestigious MBA programs.
Unlike CAT (India-specific) or CMAT (India-focused), the GMAT is truly a global examination offered year-round with flexible testing schedules. It serves as the primary admission criteria for MBA, Executive MBA, Master's in Management (MiM), Master's in Finance, and other postgraduate business programs at leading universities across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia.
The exam evaluates critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills essential for success in business graduate programs.

GMAT Scoring System
How GMAT Scoring Works
The GMAT uses a sophisticated computer-adaptive testing (CAT) algorithm that adjusts question difficulty based on your performance.
- Each section scored individually: 60-90 scale (1-point increments)
- Total score: 205-805 scale (calculated from all three sections)
- Scoring basis: Not just the number of correct answers, but the difficulty level of questions answered correctly
- Score increment: Scores end in 5 or 0 (e.g., 685, 690, 695)
Key Scoring Facts
- No negative marking – You don't lose points for incorrect answers
- Penalty for unanswered questions – Leaving a question unanswered results in a larger score penalty than answering it incorrectly
- Consecutive mistakes matter – Multiple consecutive errors result in lower difficulty levels, which impacts scoring more severely
- Experimental questions – The Data Insights section includes 2-4 experimental questions that don't count toward your final score
- Partial credit for multi-part questions – In Data Insights, two and three-part problems are all-or-nothing: either all parts correct (full credit) or no credit given
How Computer Adaptation Works
The GMAT adapts on a question-by-question basis. As you answer questions correctly, the algorithm presents progressively harder questions. Incorrect answers result in easier subsequent questions. Your section score reflects both the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of questions answered.
